A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that addresses changes in a woman’s breasts caused by factors such as weight fluctuations, gravity, aging, genetics, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin and tightening of the glandular tissues, which results in an enhanced breast contour and profile. Your first step starts with a thorough consultation conducted by board-certified surgeon Dr. Kayastha, a reputable surgeon who offers premier breast lift procedures for patients in Albany, NY.

What is Breast Lift Surgery?
A breast lift, known as mastopexy, is a form of cosmetic surgery that repositions the breasts for a more youthful appearance. Breast lift surgery reshapes the breasts by removing extra skin and lifting the patient’s existing breast tissue without changing breast size. This procedure lifts sagging breasts and addresses drooping breasts that can occur after aging or significant weight loss. For patients seeking additional volume, breast implants can be added during the same surgery.
Modern breast lift techniques focus on restoring proper nipple position, especially when the nipples sit too low, the nipples fall below the crease underneath the breast, or the nipple downward appearance has developed. In cases of extensive sagging, surgery may significantly change the position of the nipple while improving breast symmetry. Incisions are often placed around the areola and within the crease beneath the breast.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift Procedure?
Ideal breast lift candidates are women who are near their goal weight and do not expect major weight fluctuations. During your consultation, a cosmetic surgeon will review your medical history and discuss whether this outpatient procedure is right for you. Patients should be happy with their current breast volume, but may desire a more lifted breast shape as a breast lift is not intended to create smaller breasts.
Pregnancy, aging, and weight changes can cause the breasts to change. Due to these occurances the breasts stretch and the breasts sag as a result. Dr. Kayastha will use this breast lift guide to help determine the best treatment plan for your goals. Depending on your needs, specialized tools, including a thin tube, may be used during surgery to help refine your results.

If you prefer the way your breasts look when wearing a supportive bra, a breast lift may be able to help– this procedure doesn’t change their size, but rather lifts and repositions them.
Customize Your Breast Lift
Different incision patterns are available depending on factors like sagging breast tissue and the required lift degree for breast skin. Incisions can result in minor scarring, but Dr. Kayastha will take every step to ensure it’s easily concealable and give you tools to help it fade over time. Options include periareolar, vertical, and Wise Pattern incisions:

-
Periareolar Incision
This incision, also referred to as the "donut" incision, is created around the border of the areola, or the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. This pattern ensures that any scarring is easily concealed within this pigmentation. It’s often recommended for cases of mild sagging and women who want to add implants.
-
Vertical Incision
The vertical incision, also referred to as the “lollipop” incision, is an extension of the former and includes a vertical incision down from the areola to the breast crease. This incision is an ideal option for mild to moderate sagging– the vertical portion of this incision is hidden under the underside of the breast and is typically not noticeable after recovery.
-
Wise Pattern Incision
The anchor incision is the most extensive option – it continues the vertical incision with a horizontal incision along the breast crease, similar to an anchor or inverted “T.” It’s often recommended for significant sagging or patients who want a breast reduction and can result in visible medial scarring. This can be discussed further at your consultation with Dr. Kayastha.
Breast Lift Results
Initial breast lift results are noticeable immediately, but swelling will take several weeks to completely subside to the breasts’ final position. Many patients see an enhanced breast contour in just six weeks, but the final outcome for most patients becomes most evident around six months post-surgery.
Recovering from Breast Lift
After your breast lift procedure, you can expect one to two weeks of downtime. Dr. Kayastha recommends adhering to activity restrictions and wearing a surgical bra for optimal healing. Most patients experience soreness for the first two to ten days, but it can be well-managed with prescription pain medication.
Non-strenuous activities of daily living can be resumed in 24-48 hours, but rigorous exercise should not be performed for five to six weeks. Dr. Kayastha will give you a detailed recovery timeline and follow up with you to monitor your progress.
One to two weeks of dedicated rest and recovery are required after a breast lift. Within five to six weeks, you’ll begin to enjoy your results – at which point, you can return to your regular exercise and activities.

What to Expect
Before Treatment: Before your procedure, a detailed consultation with Dr. Kayastha will establish your aesthetic goals, forming a personalized surgery plan for optimal outcomes.
During Treatment: Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia, usually on an outpatient basis. Some patients require an overnight hospital stay, though they will be made aware of this ahead of time when possible.
Immediately After: After breast lift surgery, expect to experience tenderness, swelling, and bruising. Dr. Kayastha will provide pain medications and aftercare instructions to help with initial discomfort in the weeks after surgery.
Alternatives to Breast Lift
For a more youthful breast contour, the patient may consider alternatives like breast augmentation, breast reduction, or a combination of breast augmentation, depending on individual goals:
