Whitney M.

I was also thinking of going with a different place until I met Dr. Kayastha. Within 5 minutes of meeting him, I knew he was the one. He has an amazing bedside manner plus he was honest and straight forward from the beginning. He spent quite a bit of time with me explaining everything and didn’t send me to meet with his office staff to explain important details about the surgery like the other 2 places. I never felt like he was rushing with me to see another patient. My result were amazing and I would highly recommend Dr. Kayastha. Once you meet him, you won’t want to go anywhere else!!

What is Lesion Removal?

Dr. Kayastha offers lesion excisions for various skin and subcutaneous lesions, including moles, lipomas, cysts, and abscesses that may be changing, uncomfortable, or aesthetically displeasing. Additionally, certain skin lesions could be pre-cancerous or cancerous– if this is a possibility, a biopsy will be performed to ensure that the nature of the lesion is clarified. The variation of lesions can change the removal method utilized, but Dr. Kayastha performs these excisions daily, emphasizing the removal of the lesion while minimizing discomfort.

Who is a Good Candidate for Lesion Removal?

Individuals with abnormal skin growths, medically or cosmetically concerning, may benefit from lesion removal. If the skin legion is diagnosed as cancerous or precancerous, additional screenings may be needed. Consultation with Dr. Kayastha is essential to assess candidacy.

A thorough examination by Dr. Kayastha can determine the right treatment approach and removal method for your skin.

Customize Your Lesion Removal Procedure

Lesion Removal

CUSTOMIZATION

  • Shave Excision

Utilizing a small blade, shave excision removes the outermost layers of skin. Stitches are not usually needed.

  • Simple Scissor Excision

Small forceps gently pull the lesion in the upper skin layer, and small scissors will be used to carefully cut around and under the lesion. Stitches are rarely needed.

  • Full-Thickness Skin Excision

Removes skin lesions located in the deeper levels of the skin. The area will then be closed with stitches.

  • Curettage and Electrodesiccation

For precancerous or cancerous lesions. The lesion is scrapped with a long, thin instrument called a curette and the remaining cancer cells are destroyed by applying an electrical current.

Lesion Removal Results

Depending on the technique used, wound healing will take between 1-2 weeks. Stitches are applied strategically to minimize visible scarring, and aftercare instructions will be provided for optimal recovery.

Recovery from Lesion Removal

Lesion removal is an outpatient procedure performed with local anesthesia, allowing patients to drive home afterward. Some tenderness is to be expected and usually Tylenol or Advil will be adequate to control any discomfort. Proper adherence to aftercare instructions will help ensure optimal healing. Most patients can resume regular activities after just 24-48 hours.

Lesion removal can ensure a spot on your skin is removed comfortably, effectively, and completely. In some cases, lesion removal involves pre-cancerous or cancerous areas, while other times it’s a purely cosmetic procedure. In either case, it can ensure a good cosmetic result, minimizing scarring and leaving clear skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cyst removal hurt?

Before cyst removal, you will generally be numbed using a small injection. This means that the only pain you should feel is the same as receiving a vaccination or other shot.

Can I have my mole removed without a scar?

Maybe, but no matter what method is used there is usually some evidence that there was a lesion there before. You should think of having a lesion removed as a trade-off. For no longer having the spot there is usually a small and, hopefully, inconspicuous mark. A normal-appearing mole (nevus) can be removed by shaving off the surface and cauterizing the base. This technique often heals with minimal scarring. If a mole has any concerning characteristics shaving it off is not recommended. In this case, it should be surgically excised. This usually results in a straight-line scar.

Is having my mole, skin lesion, lipoma, or cyst removed covered by insurance?

Most lesions that are changing, growing, or irritating in some fashion are covered by insurance.

Do they put you to sleep for lesion removal?

Most lesion removal procedures, including mole, lipoma, or cyst removal, are performed under local anesthesia. This means you are awake throughout the procedure.

How do you get rid of lesions?

A board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist can perform a skin lesion removal procedure. For your safety, dont attempt to remove lesions at home.

What happens after mole removal?

Usually, the surgical site is dressed in steri-strips and gauze. You may shower that night or the next morning. Heavy activity / strenuous exercise should be avoided for 48 hours. Swimming and hot tubs should be avoided until your sutures come out.

Whats the difference between a lesion and a tumor?

A lesion is generally considered to be an area of the skin that is abnormal, meaning a lesion can be cancerous in nature.

When should I be concerned about a skin lesion?

Its always best to err on the side of caution with skin lesions. If you notice any changes or have concerns, check with your doctor.

I’m scared to have my birthmark removed. What is the process like?

Typically a consultation is required before any removal is considered. Dr. Kayastha will need to examine you. At that time he will review alternatives for how to best treat your lesion. Most patients will then schedule an appointment to have their procedure done. They may drive themselves to and from their appointment. After the preliminary steps, like signing a surgical consent, are completed, you are ready to finally have your procedure. For this, you will be placed in a comfortable position on an operating chair. You can have a family member present in the operating room if you want. Next, the area will be cleaned with antiseptic soap. After that, a local anesthetic will be injected into the site. Finally, after making sure that you are not going to feel any pain, Dr. Kayastha will perform your surgery.

How long does it take to recover from cyst removal?

After cyst removal, the incision should heal within a few weeks. Dr. Kayastha can explain what you should expect before your procedure.

Does mole removal leave a scar?

Mole removal with a plastic surgeon should result in virtually invisible scarring.

How long does it take to remove a lesion?

Lesion removal can be very quick, taking only around 30 minutes. This depends on the size, technique, and anesthetic needs, however.

Is the lesion removal procedure painful?

Not really. Most patients find the pain associated with the local anesthetic injection to the only painful part of the procedure. Dr. Kayastha uses a formulation of local anesthetic that is less acidic and therefore burns less upon injection.

When should a cyst be removed?

A cyst should be removed if it is causing you pain or continues to grow larger over time.

Why should I have a plastic surgeon remove a cyst/lipoma from the middle of my back?

You don’t have to have a plastic surgeon do this. However, if you have any concern about what your scar might look like then you should consider having a plastic surgeon perform your procedure. Other doctors can get the job done, but they might not have the same level of interest in how your scar is going to turn out as a plastic surgeon will.

What does a lesion on the skin look like?

Skin lesions can have many different appearances but always look abnormal versus the skin around it.

Will I have a scar? What kind of scar will I have?

Any time the skin is cut to perform surgery there must be a scar. The length of your scar will depend on the type of surgery and how extensive it is. Dr. Kayastha is committed to using the shortest scars possible while still achieving the results you want. Dr. Kayastha takes great care to ensure that you will have the best scar possible. Surgery is performed precisely and gently. After surgery multiple techniques including taping, silicone sheeting, scar cream, massage and lasers may be used to optimize the appearance of your scar.
