What is Nipple Surgery?
Nipple surgery is a cosmetic procedure that can address concerns such as a larger nipple, nipple inversion, asymmetry, or extra nipples. Patients with long or oversized nipples may choose nipple reduction surgery to remove excess tissue and improve nipple size or projection. Many people confuse the areola, the darker pigmented breast skin surrounding the nipple, with the nipple itself, which is the projected part of the breast. Nipple correction can be performed as a standalone procedure or combined with areola reduction or another form of cosmetic plastic surgery.
Inverted nipple correction may involve releasing shortened milk ducts or tight underlying tissues that pull the nipple inward. For patients who have undergone breast reconstruction, nipple reconstruction surgery may be used to create a new nipple on the reconstructed breast mound. During a nipple reconstruction procedure, nearby skin or extra breast tissue may be shaped to form a reconstructed nipple that complements the breast.
Who is a Good Candidate for Nipple Surgery?
Patients who are unhappy with the size, shape, projection, or position of their nipples may be candidates for a nipple surgical procedure. This may include individuals seeking nipple reconstruction, correction of inverted nipples, removal of extra tissue, or reduction of prominent nipples. The procedure may be combined with another breast surgery or performed alone when patients are otherwise satisfied with the appearance of their breasts.

Length Reduction
Nipples can be reduced in length for patients who have prominent nipples or nipples long enough to droop.

Nipples that are especially wide and thick– a feature commonly seen on smaller chests– can be reduced as well.

Puffiness Reduction
By removing some of the tissue underneath the nipple and areola, puffy nipples caused by hormones or excess fat can be reduced.

Areola Reduction
This technique removes some of the pigmented skin of the areola, reducing its size and achieving a better aesthetic balance against the breast.
Nipple Surgery Results
Results are immediate though visibility may be hidden under swelling for a few weeks. Some redness may be apparent at the surgical site, but scarring will be hidden with the pigmentation of the areola as it fades. Puffy or prominent nipples will be flattened significantly for a shapelier appearance.
Recovering from Nipple Surgery
Little bruising, swelling, and tenderness around the incision area are common but will heal quickly. Most patients return to normal activity within a day or two, but recovery can be longer if patients choose to combine their nipple surgery with another breast procedure.
If you undergo nipple surgery by itself, you can return to daily life within a few days with minor swelling and tenderness.
