Whenever a person laughs, smiles, or makes any kind of facial expression, the muscles of the face contract and, over time, this repeated action can cause permanent furrows and creases on the face. These wrinkles are found most prominently around the areas of the forehead, mouth, and the eyes. Botox is one of the leading non-surgical procedures for alleviating these obvious signs of aging and improving the appearance of moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles around the face.

What is Botox Cosmetic?
Cosmetic Botox is a prescription medicine made from botulinum toxin type A, a form of the same toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Injections of botulinum toxin temporarily reduce activity in the associated muscles, helping improve moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, and facial wrinkles. Botox can also treat frown lines, including lines between the brows, and soften forehead lines caused by repetitive facial movements.
Botox is also used as a prescription treatment for certain medical conditions, including chronic migraine, cervical dystonia, muscle spasms, severe underarm sweating, excessive sweating, and overactive bladder. It may help improve bladder control and some forms of urinary incontinence. As an FDA approved treatment, Botox has been evaluated through clinical trials for its approved cosmetic and therapeutic uses.
Who Is a Candidate for Botox Injections?
Patients seeking a nonsurgical way to address visible signs of aging may benefit from Botox treatments. During your consultation, tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, especially muscle or nerve conditions, vision problems, allergic reactions, nerve disorders, asthma symptoms, neck pain, swallowing difficulties, or a skin infection near the planned injection site. You should also disclose any vertical bands connecting the jaw and neck or other abnormal facial change that may affect treatment planning.
Provide a complete list of medications, including over the counter medicines, blood thinners, sleep medicine, and any other botulinum toxin products you have recently received. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or concerned about whether Botox may pass into breast milk should discuss treatment with their provider.
Seek immediate medical attention if serious symptoms occur after treatment, including general muscle weakness, all over muscle weakness, swallowing problems, or difficulty breathing. Dr. Kayastha will review your health history, cosmetic goals, and previous procedures to determine whether Botox or another treatment is appropriate.

Botox is widely known for targeting and relaxing key facial muscles responsible for causing wrinkles on the forehead, crow’s feet, and frown lines.
What Happens During Botox Treatment?
Most patients tolerate Botox injections well, but we can supply a topical numbing cream if needed. After washing and preparing the treatment area, the injector then places the gel under the skin and into the specific muscles. This requires extensive knowledge of facial muscles and anatomy, so you should always receive injections from licensed and experienced injectors. Depending on how many areas you choose to have treated, your procedure can take as little as fifteen minutes.
What Can I Expect After Botulinum Toxin Type A Treatment?
Some patients experience minor swelling or redness at the injection site, as well as some discomfort. It can take up to a week for the injection to completely take effect, but patients normally retain some movement of the treated muscles while Botox is in place. It’s important to avoid rubbing or massaging the treatment area after the procedure, as this can cause the injection to spread to unwanted areas. Botox usually lasts from three to four months, after which the injection can be repeated.
To see what Botox can do for you, contact our office and schedule a consultation with Dr. Kayastha who can create your unique treatment plan.

With no incisions or anesthetics, the Botox procedure is one of the most popular nonsurgical options due to the lack of pain associated with both injections and recovery.
