Is There Such a Thing as Botox Side Effects?

Botox is the most popular injectable to address facial wrinkles and creases and it is generally very safe. But, like any cosmetic procedure, it’s important that you have your treatments delivered by a skin care professional who is trained to deliver Botox injections. Side effects with Botox are extremely rare, but they can occasionally occur.

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-neuromodulator, a type of injectable that uses a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin A to prevent and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is used to smooth crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, glabellar lines (frown lines), vertical forehead lines, bunny lines around the nose, and more! Botox also has medical uses and can be injected around the jawline and scalp to improve migraines and TMJ syndrome.

Botox Side Effects

Side effects from Botox may include the following:

  • Extreme redness and/or pain at the injection site that does go away within a day or two following treatment
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Drooping or muscle weakness of the upper eyelid muscles
  • Difficulty breathing and/or swallowing (very rare)

These possible complications are extremely rare and we have never had a serious Botox complication at K Plastic Surgery. Our injectors are highly trained and have years of experience performing safe injections on our patients. All of our injections are guided by Dr. Kayastha, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Albany, NY.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Injector

The injector plays a very important role in your Botox treatment. The injector should have an excellent understanding of facial anatomy, and he or she should have knowledge of the right number of Botox units required to achieve the specific outcomes you seek.

Your injector should have the following characteristics:

  • Training that is specific to Botox injections
  • Experience in injecting Botox for aesthetic purposes
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Honest concern for your safety
  • Willingness to answer all of your questions concerning Botox
