Fat grafting is a procedure that removes your own fat to re-implant it where needed. It is typically extracted from locations with excess fat like the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks, and injected into another area that requires some filling, such as a patient’s facial features. When used as a facial filler, fat grafting can improve the creased and sunken areas of the face and add fullness to the lips and cheeks.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR Fat Transfer?
Candidates for fat transfer are those who want to restore natural-looking volume to their face. Facial volume loss can be due to a number of reasons including the aging process and weight loss. Volume loss can result in sunken facial features, wrinkles, and sagging. Those who experience mild to moderate volume loss and are looking for a nonsurgical solution for facial rejuvenation can benefit from a natural fat transfer. The fat transfer offers an alternative to filler formulas that also add instant volume. To be a successful candidate, patients must have enough excess fat in areas such as the abdomen or thighs that can be used for placement. They must also be prepared to undergo liposuction techniques for their fat harvesting.
Fat transfer is a versatile procedure utilizing the patient’s fat for natural-looking volume restoration in common areas including the face, buttocks, and breasts.
What Happens During a Fat Transfer?
To begin a facial fat transfer, liposuction is performed on the donor site, typically the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs. This is done under local anesthesia or light sedation for patient comfort. Through tiny incisions, a cannula is placed and used to break up and remove fat cells. Those fat cells will then be processed until only pure fat cells remain. Those fat cells can then be placed in areas such as the lips, cheeks, under the eyes, and in folds and wrinkles to create a smoother, younger appearance.
What Will My Recovery Be Like?
Recovery after the fat transfer will involve the donor site as well as the placement site. Patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in both areas following treatment. Because your own fat was used, there is no risk of the body rejecting the fat cells.
After treatment, you can expect instantly added volume to the facial features for enhanced lips, more defined cheekbones, and younger-looking skin. Results from a fat transfer are long-lasting, but treatments cannot stop the natural aging process. A touch-up session may be required in the future for maintenance.
Along with providing natural augmentation, fat transfers simultaneously contour and smooth the fat donor site.
