Rosacea is a relatively common skin disease, considering that over 14 million people in the United States are currently affected. Despite its commonality, many patients with rosacea experience various facial skin symptoms ranging from physical redness to emotional distress. For some rosacea patients, the emotional impact of their condition is just as bad, if not worse, than the physical symptoms. A mental health professional may even be needed when anxiety disorders or emotional stress become overwhelming due to persistent skin redness or facial swelling.
Rosacea Symptoms
Individuals who develop rosacea often notice a characteristic red flush that is triggered by a wide variety of personal trigger factors, from spicy foods to emotional stress, sun exposure, or a sudden change in temperature. This redness, often more prominent in those with fair skin, typically appears on the cheeks. Other symptoms of rosacea include the appearance of visible blood vessels, acne-like sores that resemble acne, a bulbous nose due to skin thickening, and irritation in the eyes, also known as ocular rosacea.
In cases of severe rosacea, individuals may experience more severe symptoms, which could require both oral and topical medications as part of a tailored treatment regimen. Rosacea treated early and consistently can reduce flare ups and long-term complications. Laser treatment can help remove visible blood vessels and improve overall appearance.
Since disease severity varies from person to person, selecting the most appropriate treatment depends on a thorough evaluation of disease severity, common rosacea triggers, and the patient’s skin care routine. If skin irritants are avoided and the right combination of rosacea therapies and medical treatment is followed, patients can significantly improve their quality of life and patient’s emotional health. Left unmanaged, increased risk of complications may arise, reinforcing the importance of professional care for rosacea patients.
How Rosacea Affects People
Emotional Stress and Anxiety Disorders
Although the aforementioned symptoms may be harmless, the results of a recent survey by the National Rosacea Society suggest that rosacea sufferers experience negative emotions including anxiety, embarrassment, and reduced self-esteem.
In a press release, the National Rosacea Society revealed that rosacea, regardless of severity, had a negative impact on its sufferers. Here’s an excerpt of the press release:
“Of the total patients surveyed, 90 percent said that rosacea’s effect on their personal appearance had lowered their self-esteem and self-confidence, and 88 percent said they had suffered embarrassment. They also reported a wide range of other negative feelings, including frustration, cited by 76 percent; anxiety and helplessness, each noted by 54 percent; depression, 43 percent; anger, 34 percent; and isolation, 32 percent. Fifty-two percent of the respondents said they had avoided face-to-face contact because of the disorder.”
