Body contouring procedures help patients get a slimmer, firmer figure. Dr. Kayastha offers many various body contouring procedures to his patients in Albany, Saratoga, Clifton Park, Schenectady, and surrounding communities. Two popular body contouring treatments that he offers are SmartLipo laser liposuction and Tummy Tucks. Dr. Kayastha can give his patients a slimmer abdominal profile with these two procedures. He consults with each patient to determine the right procedure for them, but we want to help give you an idea of which method might be the best for you.
What Is Smartlipo?
SmartLipo is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser energy to target unwanted fat. Rather than only using a cannula to break up fat cells, laser lipo first heats and liquefies the fat, making the removal process less traumatic on the body. This allows for precise fat removal and effective fat reduction in areas with localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise.
SmartLipo can be used in many of the same areas as traditional liposuction surgery and may also help tighten mild sagging skin. Patients with good skin elasticity generally experience the best skin-tightening results because good skin elasticity tends to help the tissues contract after treatment. However, SmartLipo cannot address loose skin as extensively as a tummy tuck. Dr. Kayastha works with each patient individually to map out the treatment areas and develop a personalized body sculpting plan.
What’s the Laser Lipo Procedure Like?
To help patients feel relaxed and comfortable, Dr. Kayastha performs SmartLipo using local anesthesia and oral medication. A tumescent solution is introduced into the treatment area to numb the tissues and constrict the blood vessels, minimizing bleeding. Dr. Kayastha then makes small incisions so the laser fiber can be inserted to heat and melt the body fat.
Once the fat has been liquefied, it is removed with a cannula, similar to standard liposuction. During this cosmetic procedure, Dr. Kayastha also applies energy beneath the skin to encourage tissue contraction. Because SmartLipo is less invasive than traditional surgery, it is often selected by patients seeking a targeted body contouring solution with a shorter recovery.
What Is a Tummy Tuck?
Achieving a flatter abdomen can be difficult, even with regular diet and exercise. Weight loss, pregnancy, aging, or significant weight gain can leave behind excess abdominal skin, stubborn fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. In some cases, patients may also have separated abdominal muscles that cannot be corrected through exercise alone.
A tummy tuck, formally known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the abdominal area. Unlike SmartLipo, a tummy tuck removes excess skin and repairs the underlying muscles when necessary. A full tummy tuck may be recommended for patients with significant loose skin, while a mini tummy tuck may be appropriate when concerns are limited to the lower abdomen. Dr. Kayastha creates an individualized treatment plan to help each patient achieve a slimmer, firmer abdominal profile.
What’s the Body Contouring Procedure Like?
Dr. Kayastha offers various anesthetic techniques, but a tummy tuck is typically performed under general anesthesia in a hospital to ensure patient safety and comfort. The procedure involves making an incision along the bikini line and, depending on the technique, around the navel. The excess skin and fat are lifted away from the underlying abdominal wall.
The muscles are then inspected and repaired if they have been stretched by pregnancy, aging, or significant weight fluctuations. Next, the amount of excess skin is carefully determined and removed. Liposuction may also be performed on the abdomen and love handles to improve the contour of the entire midsection. Because it is more extensive than SmartLipo, a tummy tuck typically involves a longer recovery period.
Key Differences Between Smart Lipo Laser Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck
Both procedures can improve the abdominal profile, but they address different concerns. SmartLipo is generally best for patients near their ideal body weight who have small pockets of unwanted fat, mild skin laxity, and no need for muscle repair. It is not intended as an alternative to maintaining a healthy lifestyle or reaching a stable weight, but can remove excess fat.
A tummy tuck is generally more appropriate for patients with substantial loose skin or stretched abdominal muscles following pregnancy or major changes in weight. SmartLipo can be performed in the office with local anesthesia and oral medication, while a tummy tuck is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. SmartLipo offers a less extensive recovery, but a tummy tuck recovery is more extensive and can remove more skin and fat at one time.
The best candidates for either option are in good overall health and have realistic expectations. A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon can determine which treatment is most appropriate based on the amount of fat, skin laxity, muscle separation, and the patient’s goals. Dr. Kayastha will also review the potential side effects and risks of each procedure during the consultation.
