Myths to Facts: The Truth About Body Contouring Treatments

Body contouring is one of the most popular types of plastic surgery. Body contouring is a broad term for procedures like tummy tucks, liposuction, and body lifts that are used to redefine the curves of the body. During a body contour procedure, excess fat and loose skin are removed to tighten the figure, but there are a few misunderstandings about what body contouring can accomplish.

We outlined these myths (with corresponding facts!) below.

Body contouring procedures will help me lose weight.

This is a myth. Body contouring procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks are not designed to help you lose weight. These procedures are ideal for those who are at or near their ideal body weight but are still left with stubborn pockets of fat and/or loose, sagging skin. Body contouring procedures will not help anyone who is obese or overweight and it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine after surgery.

Body contouring treatments are painful.

New technologies have dramatically lessened, or even removed, pain or discomfort during treatment. Take CoolSculpting, for example. There are no needles, no surgical incisions, no anesthesia, no pain medications, and minimal recovery time. During the procedure, a non-invasive vacuum applicator is applied to the surface of the skin to deliver precisely-controlled cooling that removes fat cells in the targeted area. However, surgical body contouring will still involve some discomfort and minimal pain during recovery. This discomfort should only last for about one week.

Body contouring treatments will help me avoid weight gain in the future.

The focus of body contouring is to reshape or redefine your body. There is no guarantee that such treatments will prevent weight gain following surgery. Although liposuction will remove fat cells in a certain area of the body, it will not affect the fat cells in surrounding tissues and there’s a good chance that they will grow if you gain weight. After body contouring procedures, continue to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
