Most women, especially those who have had children, have stretch marks. There are a wide variety of treatments and procedures — from Vitamin E supplements to shea butter creams — that supposedly improve stretch mark-riddled areas of the body, but they don’t offer permanent solutions. Fraxel changes all of that!
How Does the Fraxel Laser Work?
Fraxel is an ablative laser that employs a controlled wound-healing technique to improve the appearance of stretch marks. Tiny wounds or microchannels are made in the skin with the Fraxel laser, triggering the body’s natural wound-healing process. Each of these wounds is surrounded by untreated skin that plays a critical role in encouraging collagen production. This increased collagen production is part of the body’s healing response.
Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the body that helps the skin maintain its plump, smooth appearance. Collagen production decreases as we age, causing the skin to lose elasticity, volume, and the ability to heal from damage. As new collagen and healthy skin cells resurface the skin, the appearance of stretch marks is greatly diminished.
Other Issues Addressed by Fraxel
Apart from stretch marks, Fraxel works well on many other skin conditions caused by natural aging, sun damage, and other environmental factors. Fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars can all be treated with the Fraxel laser. Melasma, a skin condition triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy, can also be treated. Fraxel is most commonly used on the face, neck, and chest, meaning stretch marks on the breasts can be effectively treated.
The Fraxel Treatment
A typical Fraxel treatment lasts from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the degree of pigmentation or textural concern and the size of the treatment area. Before treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area to keep you comfortable. Multiple sessions may be needed to achieve desired outcomes.
