What to Know If You’re Considering Breast Augmentation

If you’re unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, you’re not alone. Many women experience changes in their breasts because of factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or normal aging. Breast augmentation remains the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed each year and can be one of the most effective options for transforming the look of your breasts. Patients may have misinformation or misunderstandings about what breast augmentation entails. Many have questions about safety and whether or not they are a candidate for breast augmentation. If you’re considering going through breast enhancement surgery, then there are a few things you should be aware of going into your consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

The customizability of breast augmentation

There are more options than ever when it comes to breast augmentation as the industry advances. These include a wide variety of implant shapes, sizes, textures, and types, as well as various incision and placement options. With the help of Dr. Kayastha, you can enjoy a completely customized procedure that fits your goals.

It can also be worth exploring your options for a combination breast lift and breast augmentation procedure. This can be especially beneficial if you have sagging and a loss of volume. In short, Dr. Kayastha can help you achieve truly customized results with a variety of techniques, technologies, and approaches to breast surgery.

How does breast augmentation work?

Breast implant surgery begins with a private consultation with your board-certified plastic surgeon. There, you can discuss whether breast augmentation is right for you, as well as your goals for surgery. You’ll also make decisions about your preferred implants, placements, and incision techniques. Finally, you’ll discuss whether you want to pair it with any other procedures.

This is the best time to ask questions about what to expect and express any fears or anxieties about your surgical journey. Your board-certified plastic surgeon can provide the most up-to-date information and help you make an informed decision about your body. You’ll be given detailed instructions on preparing for surgery and what to expect afterward, so make sure to follow these exactly.

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Kayastha will meet with you prior to surgery to perform preoperative markings. If you have any last-minute concerns or questions this would be the time to discuss them. Breast augmentation is performed using general anesthesia. Dr. Kayastha will perform a predetermined incision and create a pocket to place your breast implant into. Implants will be placed either on top of the chest muscles or underneath them, according to your plan created with Dr. Kayastha. Once the implants are in place and any other procedures are performed, the incisions are closed using specialized sutures. Then, you’ll be made ready for your recovery phase. In total, breast augmentation takes about 2 hours or less.

Breast augmentation recovery and results

You’ll wake up from surgery in a comfortable recovery room. You’ll be monitored until you’re ready to go home, fitted with dressings and a specialized surgical bra to support your new implants. It’s mandatory that you be driven home by a close friend or family member – you’ll be groggy and unfit to drive after your procedure. They should also plan to stay with you for a minimum of 23 hours to make sure you are ok. Make sure to fill your prescriptions ahead of time so you can travel straight home after surgery.

It’s important to rest and recover after your surgery, so make sure to take the prescribed painkillers to manage discomfort. It’s normal to feel some nausea as the general anesthetic wears off. You can start eating bland foods like crackers as soon as you feel comfortable doing so. It’s also normal to experience a small amount of swelling and redness, but it should begin to subside after the first few days. You’ll follow up with Dr. Kayastha to make sure you’re recovering properly and lookout for signs of infection. If any stitches are used, these will be removed at our office. Make sure to ask any questions about your recovery process so you can follow your aftercare instructions properly.

It’s important to wear your surgical bra as much as possible after your surgery, removing it only to shower and change dressings. This supportive bra helps your implants settle into their new location and also relieves pressure off your incisions. Dr. Kayastha will indicate when you can begin going without it, as well as when you can return to light exercise or your workplace.

It can take a few months for swelling to completely subside and for your implants to settle into their final position. During this time, you may still have some bruising, redness, and numbness in your breasts. It’s important to be patient with your body and remain vigilant for any signs of infection. It can take a year or more for your scars to fade, and our team can recommend the best products to use throughout your recovery to help the process.
