What is PRP Hair Restoration Therapy?
Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, therapy is a new, advanced technique that can be effectively applied to hair restoration. This method uses PRP, which is derived from the patient’s blood (by separating it into the blood cells and plasma), to jumpstart the body’s hair follicles to produce and grow hair faster and thicker. This is possible because the plasma contains platelets that are rich in growth factors. These substances are naturally responsible for the skin’s turnover rate and production of things like collagen and elastin. In this case, growth factors can return hair follicles to their normal production rate.
Who is a Candidate for PRP Hair Restoration Therapy?
PRP Hair Restoration can be an excellent alternative to follicle transplant techniques, which can be invasive and require the use of foreign substances. Because PRP therapy uses the patient’s own blood, there’s little risk of reaction or irritation. Candidates that benefit most from PRP techniques are those that are beginning to show signs of early hair loss on the top of the head. Patients should also be in good health and avoid certain medications before treatment, which can be discussed during their consultation with Dr. Kayastha.
What Happens During PRP Hair Restoration Therapy?
To begin, both the donor site and the treatment area are prepared for the procedure, and a blood sample is taken from the patient. The amount needed can depend on the size of the treatment area, which will be determined by the aesthetician. The vials are them placed within a centrifuge which quickly spins them so that the blood cells are separated from the platelet-rich plasma. The PRP is then injected at regular intervals into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles in order for the PRP to best reach them. Depending on how large the treatment area is, this procedure can take around thirty minutes.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
PRP Hair Restoration therapy works best as a series of treatments, usually spaced a couple months apart, although Dr. Kayastha can recommend the best treatment plan for your intended results. In general, most patients see results after their second treatment or later, due to the nature of hair growth cycles. Patients usually experience some hair shedding before this, which usually indicates that the hair replacing it will be thicker and longer. During your consultation, Dr. Kayastha can give you the best idea of what to expect during your recovery and further treatments.
