Your Safety and Comfort is My Top Priority

Having plastic surgery is a major life decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Every procedure performed at K Plastic Surgery — from the simplest laser hair removal or filler injection to full surgery — is important and given the same attention to detail. Here, your should feel at ease, knowing that you’re not “just another patient.” We don’t rush our consultations. Instead, my goal is to listen carefully to what you are trying to achieve and then give you the realistic options for what is possible. Together, we will consider your options. I will discuss how potential procedures are performed, and detail the risks and potential complications. This is something I do personally, not leaving it to a staff member or having you read a written description. If I can’t meet your expectations, I will tell you. In the end, you should feel well informed and comfortable with your decision. Here are some answers to typical plastic surgery questions:

General FAQs

Is anesthesia dangerous?

This is one of the most common patient concerns, but generally anesthesia is very safe. When your procedure requires general anesthesia, it is performed at the hospital and supervised by an anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologists are specialists who I work with on a regular basis; I trust them implicitly with my patients. Prior to surgery we consider your health history and conduct some preoperative testing as determined by your age and medical condition. Patients with significant medical issues require more stringent clearances before they are cleared for surgery and anesthesia.

Is surgery very painful?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how little pain they have after surgery. Today, thanks to continuing advances in pain management, we have the ability to control a patient’s pain. Of course, every person responds differently, but I am careful to perform surgery gently and to treat your body with respect. I use long-acting local anesthetics and an OnQ pain pump when necessary to minimize your pain. You will be prescribed pain medication to help you get comfortable once home. I am available 24 hours a day, so if you are having significant pain you only have to call me so I can adjust your medication. It is very unusual not to be able to get a patient comfortable.

Will I have scars?

The simple answer is “yes.” Any time the skin is cut there will be a scar, but as a plastic surgeon I have the skills and knowledge to minimize your scarring. Most patients find their scars an acceptable tradeoff for the results they achieved with their surgery. In the event that you form thick or wide scars following surgery I will use my knowledge of how the skin heals to address them. There are a number of different interventions that can be taken to improve the appearance of your scars. These include massage, silicone sheeting, laser treatment, steroid injections, and revisional surgery.

I’m worried about risks and complications

Risks and complications are a real possibility with any surgery. Fortunately, most complications are rare. If you do have a complication, you can rest assured that I will use my extensive experience and skill set as a board certified plastic surgeon to treat you appropriately. You will not be ignored or cast aside. In fact, I tend to keep the closest contact with these patients to reassure them that we will work through the problem.

Isn’t plastic surgery very expensive?

Not necessarily. Obviously, different procedures have different prices depending on their complexity, but I like to think that plastic surgery should be accessible for most people. I like my patients to think of their plastic surgery as a long-term investment in you. You’re not paying for something that has an expiration date or goes bad in a year or two. To manage the cost, I offer financing plans though CareCredit. Bottom line — if you want to have surgery and are an appropriate candidate my goal is to help you find a way to get it done.

Lesion Removal FAQs

Does cyst removal hurt?

Before cyst removal, you will generally be numbed using a small injection. This means that the only pain you should feel is the same as receiving a vaccination or other shot.

Can I have my mole removed without a scar?

Maybe, but no matter what method is used there is usually some evidence that there was a lesion there before. You should think of having a lesion removed as a trade-off. For no longer having the spot there is usually a small and, hopefully, inconspicuous mark. A normal-appearing mole (nevus) can be removed by shaving off the surface and cauterizing the base. This technique often heals with minimal scarring. If a mole has any concerning characteristics shaving it off is not recommended. In this case, it should be surgically excised. This usually results in a straight-line scar.

Most lesions that are changing, growing, or irritating in some fashion are covered by insurance.

Most lesion removal procedures, including mole, lipoma, or cyst removal, are performed under local anesthesia. This means you are awake throughout the procedure.

I’m scared to have my birthmark removed. What is the process like?

Typically a consultation is required before any removal is considered. Dr. Kayastha will need to examine you. At that time he will review alternatives for how to best treat your lesion. Most patients will then schedule an appointment to have their procedure done. They may drive themselves to and from their appointment. After the preliminary steps, like signing a surgical consent, are completed, you are ready to finally have your procedure. For this, you will be placed in a comfortable position on an operating chair. You can have a family member present in the operating room if you want. Next, the area will be cleaned with antiseptic soap. After that, a local anesthetic will be injected into the site. Finally, after making sure that you are not going to feel any pain, Dr. Kayastha will perform your surgery.

Liposuction FAQs

Can I get liposuction if I am overweight?

Liposuction is not a weight reduction procedure. It is best to be near your ideal body weight when considering liposuction. If you are very overweight you may not be a candidate for the procedure.

What is the difference between the different types of liposuction?

When you’re learning about liposuction, you will hear of many different types of liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is the final common pathway because no matter what is done before that, all liposuction procedures conclude with tumescent liposuction. Laser liposuction, or SmartLipo, involves using a laser to melt fat and heat the skin prior to tumescent liposuction. It is thought to be less traumatic than tumescent liposuction alone. Heating the skin is thought to cause more skin retraction and tightening than just regular liposuction. Dr. Kayastha commonly performs laser liposuction (SmartLipo) for his patients in and around Albany, NY. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction has been around longer than laser liposuction and can be very useful in particular situations. VASER liposuction is the most popular type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Just like laser liposuction, VASER is performed before tumescent liposuction. The VASER device uses ultrasound energy just like SmartLipo uses laser energy to break up fat. VASER liposuction is particularly useful when performing high definition liposuction or when treating fibrous areas like the male chest. It can also be used in other areas to make fat removal less labor-intensive.

Are you put to sleep for liposuction?

The type of anesthesia you require for liposuction will depend on how extensive your procedure is. Small to medium amounts of liposuction can be performed in the office with local anesthesia. Larger volumes or multiple areas of the body are typically done in the hospital with general anesthesia.

Can liposuction get rid of belly fat?

Yes and no. The fat that is inside your abdomen around your intestines cannot be removed with liposuction. This type of fat is known as visceral fat. The best way to decrease visceral fat is with weight loss. The fat that can be removed with liposuction is known as subdermal fat. This is the fat between the skin and muscles of the abdominal wall.

How does Lipo work?

The first step in liposuction involves filling the treatment area with tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid is composed of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine. This fluid has multiple purposes. Lidocaine numbs the treatment area to increase comfort during and after the procedure. Epinephrine, or adrenaline, is a powerful vasoconstrictor. This means that it causes blood vessels to shrink. This works to very effectively decrease blood loss at the surgical site. The saline solution is used to distend and make the treatment area firm. This allows liposuction to be performed efficiently. After installation of the fluid, a metal tube (cannula) that has holes in the end and is connected to a vacuum is passed back and forth in the treatment area. Fat is broken loose with the cannula and removed with the vacuum.

How painful is liposuction recovery?

Liposuction surgery is not very painful compared to other common surgeries. Most patients use pain medication for about three days following liposuction. Many patients having a single area done do not use any pain medication after their procedure.

Can visceral fat be removed?

Visceral fat is fat that is inside your abdomen surrounding your vital organs. Visceral fat cannot be removed. Visceral fat does shrink with weight loss. The first-line treatments for visceral fat are diet and exercise. Sometimes, gastric bypass may be considered for those who are unable to lose weight through diet and exercise.

How much weight can you lose with liposuction?

Unfortunately fat does not weigh a lot. Even with larger volume liposuction procedures, actual weight loss is usually not more than a few pounds.

Does fat come back after lipo?

If you don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle and gain weight following liposuction, it is possible for fat to return.

What is the best type of liposuction?

Smartlipo Triplex FAQs

How long does it take to heal from Smartlipo?

Most patients are completely healed within 2-4 weeks after their Smartlipo surgery.

Is Smartlipo painful?

The Smartlipo procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia. You may feel some pressure or similar sensations, but the procedure should not be painful.

How Painful is SmartLipo?

Local anesthesia will be used during treatment with SmartLipo to ensure a comfortable process. SmartLipo is a minimally invasive procedure, using even smaller incisions than traditional liposuction techniques. This, along with the use of laser energy providing less trauma on the body, patients can expect less discomfort than with traditional liposuction.

How does SmartLipo work?

Smartlipo works by first melting fat using laser technology before removing it through suction. This allows for less bleeding or damage to the surrounding tissues.

Are you awake during Smartlipo?

Most Smartlipo procedures are completed under local anesthesia, meaning you are awake for the duration of the surgery.

Is Smartlipo as effective as traditional liposuction?

Smartlipo and traditional liposuction are more or less equally effective. Smartlipo is considered less invasive.

What are the risks of Smartlipo?

Smartlipo is generally considered safe, but like all surgeries, there are some risks. These can include bleeding, infection, or poor healing from poor care during the recovery period. To best avoid these risks, follow Dr. Kayasthas instructions carefully and disclose any medical conditions during your consultation.

Can you gain weight after Smart Lipo?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure, but rather a body contouring one. This means that weight gain is still possible in the future without monitoring your diet and getting regular exercise.

Is Smartlipo permanent?

Smartlipo is typically permanent. The fat cells that are removed will not regenerate. However, you can gain weight in other areas, which may affect your overall results.

Whats the difference in SmartLipo vs Liposuction?

Both Smartlipo and liposuction involve suctioning fat away. However, Smartlipo is completed by melting fat with lasers before it is suctioned with a cannula.

Is Smartlipo safe?

Smartlipo is generally considered safe so long as you are a suitable candidate. During a consultation, Dr. Kayastha will determine whether Smartlipo is a safe procedure for you.

Can I drive myself home after Smart Lipo?

Although the procedure is performed under local anesthesia rather than general, Dr. Kayastha still requires Smartlipo patients to have a caregiver drive them home from our surgery center.

Can you lose lower belly fat without surgery?

Often, stubborn pockets of fat throughout the body are simply unavoidable due to your bodys natural fat distribution. In these cases, for the best results, minimally invasive liposuction or other body contouring procedures can help minimize the appearance of excess fat.

Do you lose weight after Smart Lipo?

Dr. Kayastha recommends Smartlipo Triplex patients be at a healthy, stable weight before undergoing a liposuction procedure. This means that, beyond the minimal amount of fatty tissue removed, most patients do not experience a dramatic drop in weight following the procedure.

How painful is Smart Lipo?

While under local anesthesia you may feel sensations like pressure, tugging, or stinging, but the Smartlipo procedure should not be painful.

What is the difference between Lipo and SmartLipo?

SmartLipo and liposuction are both fat reduction techniques, using tiny incisions to break up and remove the stubborn fat cells. However, while liposuction uses a cannula to break up the fat cells, SmartLipo uses laser energy to melt the fat cells, making the removal process easier. This also offers skin tightening benefits, which liposuction does not.
