For a slimmer, firmer abdomen
What is a tummy tuck?
Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, general aging, and even genetics can all results in a stomach that isn’t as slim and contoured as you might wish. Furthermore, no matter how much you exercise and watch your diet, nothing seems to help.
This is because no amount of exercise can return sagging skin that lacks its former elasticity to its former state. Plus, stubborn pockets of fat, especially in the abdominal area, can be almost impossible to get rid of.
Fortunately, abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, can correct these problems and give you a slimmer, firmer abdomen once again.
Is a tummy tuck right for you?
If you are at or near your ideal body weight, but still have sagging skin and pockets of fat around your abdomen, a tummy tuck could be a good option for you. The surgery removes that excess skin and tightens the underlying muscles to return firmness and contour to your abdomen.
A tummy tuck isn’t a weight loss procedure. A tummy tuck is meant to remove excess skin caused by large weight changes, such as those due to pregnancy. These changes stretch the skin and it often won’t return to its former tightness. Those opting for a tummy tuck with Dr. Kayastha should ideally be within 10 percent of their ideal body weight.
Also, if you’re planning on getting pregnant, a tummy tuck should be postponed until after you have the child. Why? During your surgery, your vertical muscles are tightened and future pregnancies usually will separate those muscles, ruining the results of your surgery.

Before your procedure
Your first step when deciding to have a tummy tuck is a consultation with Dr. Kayastha. Together, you will discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure. Before your meeting, it’s wise to do some research on your own to better understand the surgery. This research should include viewing before-and-after photos on this website.
You will detail your medical history and Dr. Kayastha will perform a physical examination. He will also discuss your available options for the procedure and review with you the outcome he expects.
Different procedures for different needs
There are different types of tummy tucks depending on each patient’s individual situation. They are basically categorized by how extensive the surgery is. In every procedure, an incision is made and the weakened underlying muscles are tightened, and tissue is redraped. Excess skin is trimmed away and excess fat is removed or liposuctioned. The end result is a smooth, tight, toned mid-section.
Mini tummy tuck
A mini tummy tuck is meant for those with only a small amount of excess abdominal skin and fat that is located below the belly button. The incision is made below the bikini line and is smaller than with other tummy tucks.
Full tummy tuck
This is the most common tummy tuck and aims to remove a significant amount of excess skin and fat. Muscles that have become lax from pregnancy are tightened. The incision for a full tuck usually runs from hipbone to hipbone and is made below the bikini line.
Extended tummy tuck
This tummy tuck extends the length of the incision and is often combined with liposuction to address the flanks (love handles). Whereas a full tummy tuck addresses the front and the sides of the stomach area, an extended tuck also moves around the sides.
Circumferential tummy tuck / Lower Body Lift
If patients have lost extreme amounts of weight, such as after lap band or gastric bypass surgery, a circumferential tummy tuck can address their extensive loose skin on their abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. The incision in these procedures completely circles the waist. This enables Dr. Kayastha to not only contour the abdomen, but to also lift the hips, outer thighs, and buttocks.
A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia. After your surgery, the abdomen will be stitched and bandaged with a firm, elastic band that promotes proper healing. Dr. Kayastha will provide you with recovery instructions that you must follow to ensure optimal results. He’ll even give you tips on how to best position yourself while sitting or lying to ease the pain.
A tummy tuck is major surgery involving muscle and tissue, so recovery isn’t instant. Patients generally need to expect to take up to a month off work and to avoid strenuous activity for six weeks. Obviously, any heavy lifting early on is off limits.
Tummy tuck FAQs with Dr. Kayastha
How much weight can I lose from tummy tuck surgery?
This is a common question I get asked that depends on your specific body. I have some patients that are very thin and have loose skin but not much fat. These patients don’t lose much weight but see an incredible difference in the firmness and contour of their body. I also take care of patients that have had massive weight loss. These patients can have greater than 15 pounds of skin and fat removed during a tummy tuck. Average patients who are height and weight proportionate will not have that much weight removed.
How noticeable is the scarring from a tummy tuck?
It is possible to place a tummy tuck scar so that it is hidden when you are wearing a bikini. This will depend on your anatomy and how much tightening you require. The best thing that you can do is to bring the undergarments and/or bikinis with you to your consultation, so you will be able to see if you can reasonably expect the scar to be covered.
Can I get a belly piercing six months after a tummy tuck?
If you haven’t had any complications following your tummy tuck procedure you will be able to have your belly button pierced anytime after six months post op. To be certain, you can come in for a follow-up assessment to ensure that it is safe to get a piercing.
I’ve tried dieting and exercising, why won’t my belly go away?
Many patients develop redundant abdominal tissue and weakened muscles following pregnancy. A tummy tuck can remove excess fat and skin that is resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction can be used in conjunction with a tummy tuck to improve the shape of your waist. You need a tummy tuck to remove the excess skin and fat and to tighten the muscles.
Dr. Kayastha does not look at body parts in isolation. Rather, his goal is to improve the main area that needs attention and to correct the surrounding areas to achieve a beautiful result.
Sometimes a patient may require liposuction of the abdomen to reduce the thickness of the abdominal flap and to achieve the best result. When necessary, Dr. Kayastha will combine liposuction of your abdomen with your abdominoplasty to achieve the most harmonious result. Most patients having tummy tuck surgery will have fat deposits in their flanks. These “love handles” or “muffin tops” are always addressed with an abdominoplasty. The price you get for an abdominoplasty will include liposuction of the flanks if you need it.
Mons Pubis Lift
Any of the aforementioned situations that might have caused looseness of you tummy may also cause sagging of your pubic area. This is always addressed as part of your abdominoplasty procedure.
