Spider veins are thin, blue, purple or red veins that appear on the skin’s surface. Spider veins are considered a cosmetic problem and most insurance carriers do not cover their treatment. Nevertheless, spider veins also may cause symptoms, including leg pain, throbbing and itching.
The body tends to continue producing spider veins despite successful vein treatment. For this reason, follow-up intermittent treatments are often necessary. Veins slightly larger than spider veins are reticular veins, also known as feeding veins since they “feed spider veins blood.” These veins are typically blue or green and are also considered a cosmetic problem.
Spider Vein Risk Factors:
- Hormonal Changes
- Weight Changes
- Prolonged sitting or standing
Spider veins are diagnosed visually, and tend to branch out from a central point appearing to be just under the skin. Even if they do not cause any actual symptoms, an ultrasound exam may be performed to rule out more serious vascular conditions including varicose veins.
Treatment of Spider Veins in Albany by Dr. Kayastha:
The most common treatment methods are sclerotherapy and laser treatment; both are minimally invasive and require no anesthesia. Depending on the severity, multiple sessions may be necessary. Sclerotherapy is the preferred choice of treatment for in the legs. During scelerotherapy treatment a solution is injected into each affected vein, causing the vein to collapse and fade from view. The solution targets the walls of the spider veins, causing damage that forces them to seal shut. The visible vein slowly disappears from your skin over the next few weeks. Following treatment a compression tape is applied to promote healing. Laser vein treatments have also proven to be effective. Laser light delivers heat through the skin to the vein, sealing the vein walls.
