Over vs Under the Muscle
With “over the muscle” placement, also known as subglandular placement, the implant is placed under the breast gland and above the pectoralis major muscle. Subglandular placement is an option for women with adequate breast tissue to camouflage the implant and for those that require minimal lift of their nipple position.
With “under the muscle” placement, the implant is placed partially underneath the pectoralis major muscle. The muscle covers the top part of the implant and the breast gland covers the bottom part. Placing the implant behind the muscle has been associated with less scar tissue or capsular contracture. Mammography is also easier with submuscular placement.
