Whenever a person laughs or smiles, or makes any kind of facial expression, the muscles of the face contract and, over time, this repeated action could cause permanent furrows and creases on the patient’s face. These wrinkles found most prominently around the areas of the forehead, mouth and around the eyes. At K Plastic Surgery, Botox is one of the leading procedures for alleviating these obvious signs of aging and improving the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around the patient’s face.
What is Botox?
Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the country, and is one of the most-requested procedures here at K Plastic Surgery. It is a prescription medication synthesized from the botulinum type A toxin, and is indicated for use in the temporary improvement of moderate to severe wrinkles. Areas frequently treated by this condition are the areas between and on the corners of the eyes and on the forehead. It is administered by injection, directly into the underlying muscles of the affected areas to exert its effect. Immobilizing the muscles in these areas will reduce the tendency for the skin to crease and form fine lines that contribute to skin aging.
How does it work?
Botox works by temporarily implementing a paralyzing action on the underlying muscles of the area in between the eyebrows or on the forehead by blocking the nervous signals that trigger these muscles to contract. Doctors inject tiny amounts of Botox directly into the muscles of the affected areas. As the muscles become temporarily “frozen,” the patient will be unable to frown, or make dramatic facial expressions, and this results in the gradual improvement of the appearance of wrinkles in these areas.
What are the benefits of using Botox?
Botox is safe and effective and is one of the quickest ways to deal with wrinkles and fine lines on the face. The effects of Botox are immediately noticeable and patients generally see a remarkable improvement a few days after the initial treatment. Results from Botox can also last for up to six months and requires very little downtime and discomfort during and after administration.
What results should I expect from a Botox treatment?
The results obtained with this type of procedure are very subtle and will not radically alter the patient’s physical appearance. Additionally, muscle activity will not be completely cut off, allowing the patient to still be able to slightly frown, or raise the eyebrows, or make other facial expressions but not enough to crease or wrinkle the skin.
What are the side effects of using Botox?
It is normal to experience some level of discomfort at the injection site right after a Botox treatment. Other less common side effects from the procedure may include headaches, neck pain, dry mouth, tiredness, various eye problems, or allergic reactions.
