Losing fat is always cool, unless you’re a sumo wrestler. For everyone else, dumping some fat cells is awesome. Unfortunately, it’s hard to do in certain areas. Areas like the abdomen, outer thighs, and lower back are hard to get to respond to diet changes and exercise.
Until now really the only choice was liposuction, which suctions away fat pockets through small incisions made in the skin. Although the methods and technology have dramatically improved, liposuction is still invasive and requires some recovery from bruising and tissue trauma.
Luckily, two Harvard scientists theorized that kids eating lots of popsicles were getting dimples in their cheeks due to the cold from the popsicles freezing the fat cells in the cheeks. That theory turned out to be correct, so they took it one step further with CoolSculpting®, where fat cells are frozen, die, and are they flushed from the body for good.
How does CoolSculpting® work?
Those Harvard scientists figured out that fat cells freeze, and consequently die, at a higher temperature than the surrounding tissue and muscle cells. So, they designed a machine that delivered cooling down into the skin. The temperature is set to the freezing point of the fat cells, leaving the non-fat cells unharmed. A panel or panels that deliver the cooling are placed and create gentle suction that pulls the skin to the panels. The fat cells die and are removed through natural metabolic processes, similar to how fat from food is eliminated. The result is a 20% decrease in fat cells in the targeted areas.
Where can you use CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting was approved by the FDA for the abdomen (belly fat) and the flanks (love handles). But now, Kayastha Plastic Surgery has added the CoolSmooth™ applicator. This new addition to the CoolSculpting product line allows the process to be applied to the outer thighs, a classic area of fat consolidation for many women. The CoolSmooth applicator does not use vacuum pressure, so it is ideal for areas of non-pinchable fat bulges.
After CoolSculpting Treatment
The great thing about CoolSculpting is that there isn’t any downtime. Dr. Kayastha’s patients return to work or whatever they want to do immediately after their session. Patients typically start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after their treatment, with the most dramatic results coming after two months. The body continues to flush fat cells for up to four months after the treatment.
