A middle-aged woman came into our Latham practice the other day concerned about her sagging brows. “I’ve done facial exercises and have tried Botox twice but it looks like there’s no escaping the fact that I’m already old,” she lamented.
During her initial consultation with Dr. Kayastha, she was actually happy to discover there was something that can be done with her concern, either through a brow lift or an eyelid lift. If you’ve been having the same concerns and have been wondering which procedure suits you best, the information below may just help you make the decision.
When to Choose a Brow Lift
Generally, a brow lift is right if your brows sit too low on your face, just below the level of the bone above the eyes. The procedure will lift the forehead, as well as the eyelids.
A traditional brow lift involves an incision in the hairline running from one ear to the other. A newer approach involves making three to five smaller incisions in the scalp and then inserting a tiny camera and specialized instruments through those incisions to elevate the skin and muscles of the forehead and re-suspend them.
The main advantage of a brow lift is that it lifts sagging eyelids while improving the appearance of your forehead at the same time. Its primary drawback, if the surgery isn’t performed by a highly skilled surgeon, is that the forehead may appear too high, leading to a perpetually startled appearance.
When to Choose an Eyelid Lift
If the brows are still in their proper position and have not drooped downwards, an eyelid lift is the better procedure. In an eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, the brows retain their natural position and the upper eyelids are the only ones that are lifted. In some cases, puffiness may be reduced by removing or repositioning accumulated fat around the eye area. Most patients choose to have an eyelid lift over a brow lift because it offers more subtle results.
Ultimately, choosing between an eyelid lift or brow lift involves a thorough discussion of your cosmetic goals and aesthetic preferences. Call 518.346.0002 or fill out this contact form to schedule an appointment with us. We look forward to your visit!
